Hem + Haw: Turning old jeans into new bags

Written by

If you are reading this then you probably love your denims. And if you love your denims then you have probably worn out a pair of jeans and had to toss them. It is sad to see a good pair go, but what is more sad, is the fact that in the United States alone, more than 4 million tons of clothing and textiles get discarded each year. Hem + Haw is a creative project that seeks to put a dent (albeit a tiny one) into this issue and doing so in style.

The solution is a stylish way of turning old jeans into new bags. Hem + Haw founder Hope Mills has created two styles of bags which she has launched on kickstarter, the popular crowdfunding platform. The two bags are the smaller Conroy and the larger oConner. Here is the official campaign video which gives some great background into the project.

The Conroy zip pouch is the perfect addition to another bag or to use alone for a night out. It comes in two denim-and-leather combo colors. Inside you'll find a handy leather pocket, perfectly sized for credit cards. Also included: a leather wrist strap you can easily take on and off. The oConner clutch is a lightweight bag for carrying essentials. It comes with a matching 48.5” adjustable strap with button studs to easily convert for cross-body wear. The dark/light denim combo comes in a camel or chocolate colored leather.
